Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you build this?

To be frank, we were tired of uploading our files to random dodgy websites. We knew there were enough browser-based solutions for manipulating PDFs without sending them off to some unknown server, so we built a complete toolbox with all the most common tools in one place.

Why "PDF Pony"?

PDF Pony is your workhorse for everything PDF! Er uh yeah, so finding an available PDF domain name is incredibly difficult! We wanted something memorable (alliterations are catchy!) and PDF Pony.com just barely beat out PDF Pangolin dot com. We think it worked out.

Doesn't Adobe already do this?

Sure, Adobe does a lot of things. But Adobe has been quite annoying lately with its subscription pricing tactics, and that's upset a lot of customers. I used to say I'd pay 10x more for my Adobe subscription because I got so much value out of it. I don't feel that way these days. So whether you're a frustrated Adobe Acrobat user or you just need to quickly manipulate a PDF, PDF Pony is here for you.

PDF Pony has no affiliation with Adobe Inc. Adobe and Acrobat are trademarks of Adobe Inc.

Is it really free? What's the catch?

Yes! Hosting is cheap and the heavy lifting is done by your browser, not our servers. We may show ads in the future to keep the lights on.

Is this safe for sensitive documents?

Your browser crunches all of the data on your own computer. Your documents are never sent to our servers — ever. After loading this website once, you could run it completely offline! For any doubters, open the Network tab in Chrome Developer Tools and watch for yourself: no document data leaves your device.

Will you add more tools?

Oh yes, probably. Hopefully! We're always looking to improve. Tell us what you need and we can probably add it.

Can I use this for work or commercial purposes?

Fill your boots! We want this website to be an engine of productivity and wealth. Please use it to make money with your PDFs — legally, of course.

Do you have a mobile app?

The website is fully mobile responsive, meaning it works great on your phone. Some tools, like the camera scanner, actually work best on mobile. No app download required.

The Story Behind PDF Pony

Meet the Founder

Stephen Taylor

Stephen Taylor

Founder & Developer

Stephen Taylor is a digital strategist, technologist, and media commentator based in Toronto, Canada. With over two decades of experience at the intersection of technology and communications, Stephen has built a career helping organizations harness the power of digital platforms to reach and engage audiences at scale.

Stephen was one of the earliest pioneers of political blogging in Canada, launching his influential commentary platform in 2004. His early recognition of the internet's potential for community building and advocacy led him to co-found a network that grew to encompass hundreds of writers and thought leaders, establishing one of the country's first major online communities.

His talent for digital strategy attracted the attention of major media organizations. Stephen was recruited by CTV to develop their election coverage website and went on to become a regular commentator for Maclean's, Canada's longest-running news magazine. His writing and analysis have appeared in numerous publications including the National Post and the Financial Post.

Beyond media, Stephen has held leadership roles at prominent organizations. He served as a Fellow at a leading public policy think tank, where he researched applications of emerging political technology. He later became Federal Director of a national advocacy organization, managing nationwide campaigns and grassroots engagement. His private sector experience includes serving as Vice President at a global public relations firm, where he advised clients on digital communications strategy.

Stephen's expertise in digital campaigning has been sought after at the highest levels. He has served as Digital Director for successful national leadership campaigns, demonstrating the decisive impact that sophisticated digital operations can have in modern communications.

Today, Stephen continues to consult on digital strategy while building tools like PDF Pony—products that reflect his belief that powerful software should be accessible, private, and respect users. When he's not working on technology projects, Stephen writes about the evolving digital landscape and its implications for society.
